Our 13th Annual Halloween Spook-tacular!

  • The Persuasions ~ Good Old A Cappella (very scary mix) ~ We Still Ain't Got No Band ~ MCA

~ since I play this song every week to open the show, and at least 70% of the time it is the Persuasions' recording of it, I hope the guys will forgive me for adding all the screams, wolf howls, and cuckoo clock noises to it, once a year on the Halloween Special.

  • Screamin' Jay Hawkins ~ I Put A Spell On You ~ Cow Fingers and Mosquito Pie ~ Sony
~ Screamin' Jay whoops, hollers, grunts and growls through this song. Very scary, kids!
  • The Exboyfriends ~ Frankenstein ~ A Cappella's Dead
~ too scary! a song about a monster, on a CD called "A Cappella's Dead" by the "EXBOYFRIENDS"!
  • Johns Hopkins U. Octopodes ~ Tragic Kingdom ~ BOCA 2005 (Best of College A Cappella) ~ Varsity Vocals
  • The Nylons ~ Prince Of Darkness ~ Best of the Nylons ~ Attic
  • Toby Twining ~ Hell's Kitchen Hootenanny ~ Shaman ~ Catalyst
  • Tom Waits ~ Earth Died Screaming ~ Bone Machine ~ Island

~ This tune sounds like bones clanking around. The whole album features some very cool and scary instruments - sticks, upright bass, Chamberlain (a built keyboard instrument using magnetic tape sets), banjo, pedal steel, bass clarinet - accompanying Waits' unique vocal stylings.

  • Toxic Audio ~ Thriller ~ Captive Audience
  • The Cramps ~ Human Fly ~ How to Make a Monster ~ Vengeance

~ a live version of this very scary song by the Cramps, not at all a cappella, but I like their strange and creepy stuff for Halloween! The lead singer Lux Interior sounds truly demented, and the guitars buzz just like enormous Human Flies!

  • Boyz Nite Out ~ People Are Strange ~ American Vinyl
~ The Boyz really get into this one, with scary weird sounds in the middle of the song!
  • Wellesley Widows ~ Killer Queen ~ Along Came A Spider
  • The Bobs ~ Psycho Killer ~ The Bobs ~ Rhino
  • Monkey Puzzle ~ I Could Love You Every Day (A Killer Song) ~ Freakin' On The Lunar Surface
  • Moosebutter ~ Psycho: The Musical ~ See Dee
  • The Blanks ~ Happy Halloween ~ riding the wave
~ about a real scary pumpkin ~  don't let the major key and jaunty singing fool you!

Scary Shape Note and Gospel Music

  • Sacred Harp singers in Fyffe, Alabama ~ Windham ~ And Glory Shone Around: Southern Journey series ~ Rounder

"Broad is the road that leads to death,
    And thousands walk together there;
But wisdom shows a narrow path,
With here and there a traveler."

  • The Persuasions ~ Dry Bones ~ Sunday Morning Soul ~ Bullseye
  • Sacred Harp singers in Western Massachusetts ~ Eternal Day ~ Sacred Harp Singing in Western Massachusetts

"Oh what are all my suff'rings here,
If, Lord, Thou count me meet
    With that enraptured host t'appear
    And worship at Thy feet?
Give joy or grief, give ease or pain,
    Take life or friends away,
But let me find them all again
    In that eternal day."

  • Bessie Jones ~ O Death ~ Georgia Sea Island Songs ~ New World Records

    "O Death in the mornin',
    Spare me over another year."
Well, Death walked up into the sinner's gaze,
Says, "B'lieve you have waited now a little too late,
Your fever now is one hundred and two,
Have a narrow chance if you ever pull through."

~ This is the same song that Ralph Stanley sings in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou, but Bessie Jones sings "O Death in the morning" - even scarier - when you least expect Death to show up!

  • Sweet Honey In The Rock ~ That Awful Day Will Surely Come ~ The Women Gather ~ EarthBeat!

Pirates, Werewolves, Ghosts, Zombies, Mummies & Skeletons!

    "Maiden in the mor lay,
    In the mor lay,
    Sevenights fulle and a day.
    Welle was her drink.
    What was her drink?
The chelde water of the welle-spring..."

~ 14th Century English words, set to music and sung by Katharine Blake. The Mediaeval  Baebes have performed in graveyards, castles, and S&M clubs, as well as festivals like Lilith Fair.

Props to Bare Bones records who made a real scary sound effects album, Halloween Hysteria. I also used a little bit of the 100 Sound Effects: The Ultimate Collection made in Canada, distributed by Distributions Madacy Inc.

Happy Halloween!
